About Me, Rabecka Marie!

About Me

Introduction to Me

Hello World! My name is Rabecka Collins and I am a superwoman! Not only am I a single parent of two beautiful children, I’m also a part time graduate student and full time worker. I wonder how she does it…I’m a superwoman duh! Just kidding, I often wonder about this too. I have tried to come up with a variety of creative answers to this question. However, I always come to the conclusion that I am a strong willed, persistent woman who will do what it takes to succeed in life! My children are my motivators, and my desire to be greater feeds my soul.   Children + Work + School + Life = ME!
My Current Career and Aspirations
Currently, I live and work in Daytona Beach, FL at Daytona State College as a Transition Specialist.  I work for the TRIO Student Support Services program (click here to check out our program). For over 30 years, TRIO programs have been helping students from low income families to finish high school, enter college and successfully graduate. There are over 2800 TRIO programs serving nearly one million students! I work with the college level students and my goal is to keep these students motivated and in school until they earn a bachelor’s degree!
I have been working in my current position for almost a year, but have worked in the college environment for over 5 years. I started as a work study, progressed to a temporary employee, climbed to a career employee and now I am a professional. Talk about persistence!  Still, I desire more. One day, I hope to teach a computer basics, software, or educational technology course. My educational philosophy is to meet students where they are and bridge them to where they desire to be. I believe education empowers individuals. Whether it is making an A on a test or passing a course, there is a sense of gratitude and joy when learning has occurred.  Yet, I understand and respect that every student is different and I respect that! As a teacher, I believe it is my duty to foster learning and create a positive learning environment for everyone.
So, there is much for me to do. I want to earn a Microsoft Office Specialist Certification and graduate with a master’s degree in career and technical education by 2014. I believe learning is a continuous process and the fields of technology and education (among many other fields) promotes this belief as there are always innovations and changes.

What to Expect from My Blog
I plan to cover a variety of topics related to technology and education. You will encounter my views on social media websites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. I will also talk about cool ways to integrate technology into the classroom (i.e. Adobe Connect, Skype, Wii, and tablet computers), and discuss interesting (maybe even controversial) items I find on the web related to education and technology!  Above all, you will personally witness my growth with technology and read about new and fascinating things I have learned.
